One mistake I have seen in the hardware trade is choosing a component by price or appearance alone.

Both matter, of course.

But the first question should be simpler: what does the job demand?

A fitting for a frequently used kitchen cabinet has different demands from one used in a lightly used storage unit.

The weight it must support, how often it will move, the surrounding environment, and the way it will be installed all influence the choice.

This is where ‘understanding’ hardware makes a difference.

Materials, load ratings, dimensions, corrosion resistance, and compatibility with the larger system are not simply technical specifications. They help determine whether the product is suitable for the application it’s meant to service.

Important Notes to Oneself: The cheapest option is not always the most economical if it needs frequent adjustment or early replacement. Equally, an expensive component is not automatically the right one!

At WUMM, we believe informed selection is also part of good engineering. Choose hardware for the job it must do—not just for the price on the label.
